Digital Survival Kit / 数字生存包

Fix your phone before China fixes your plans

Don't spend your first 3-4 days as a digital refugee - one seasoned traveler did, fumbling with no mobile payment, no maps and a dead Google. Set up payment, access, maps, translation and local discovery before you fly.

VPN

Install before departure so overseas apps, email and websites remain reachable when you need them.

Guide note

Maps

Use Apple Maps or Amap (高德). Do not rely on Google Maps for China routing.

Guide note

Translation

Keep a daily translation tool ready for directions, restaurants and quick conversations.

Getting around

Getting around China

For cross-city travel, high-speed rail is usually the best option; flights come next, then city rides and metro inside Alipay.

Policy snapshot covers 24 provinces, regions and municipalities for transit planning.

Flights

Useful for longer jumps, but compare total airport time before choosing them over rail.

Didi ride hailing in Alipay

Use the Didi option inside Alipay for city rides, pickup points and payment continuity.

Metro transit card in Alipay

Use the transit card inside Alipay for metro and bus rides where supported.
